Heavy rain washes out second round of 35th Junior PGA Championship

After heavy rain left Sycamore Hills Golf Club under nearly two inches of rain, the second round of play was canceled due to inclement weather. All players who had started their rounds will have their strokes and any penalties declared null and void. Play was originally suspended at 8:30 a.m. ET, with Tournament Officials calling play for Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. "We will continue to evacuate water from the course and condition the bunkers so we are ready to go first thing tomorrow morning," said Golf Course Superintendent Jeff Geller. "We are under a little more pressure this week, but we will get the job done and win the battle with the weather." Only 54 of the 156 players had begun their rounds, with the first group of boys' and girls' teeing off at 7:00 a.m. All groupings and starting times for the second round will remain the same for Wednesday. "The second round of play has been canceled because the course is unplayable," said Championship Director and PGA Professional Chris Childers. "We will continue to work with the grounds' crew to prepare for play tomorrow." The Junior PGA Championship will now become a 54-hole event, and feature a 36-hole cut for the low 35 boys and 35 girls, including ties, following the second round of play on Wednesday. This year's field consists of past winners of the Championship, PGA Junior Series event champions, Junior PGA Section champions, many of Junior Golf Scoreboard, Polo Golf and Golfweek's top-ranked players, and selected national junior tournament winners. Also at stake is a berth on the 2010 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team. The champion and runner-up in each division, provided they are a member of the 2011 or later graduating class and American citizens, will be exempt to the Junior Ryder Cup, which will be conducted at the Gleneagles Hotel and Resort, Sept. 27-28, 2010, in Perthshire, Scotland. Golf Channel will present a one-hour highlight program of the 2010 Junior PGA Championship, with the first airing on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 8:00 ET.
