Whitcomb Blog: Enjoying Saturday, anticipating Sunday

In the latest entry of his blog, PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb reveals his grand Saturday night plans and explains that, as great as the entire week has been, the biggest excitement will come with the crowning of a new champion.

SUNRIVER, Ore. -- I may need a bigger house. We invited four good friends and fellow PGA Professionals to stay with us this week and all four of them happened to make the cut and are playing this weekend. It's a good thing this tournament is across the country at Reynolds Plantation next year or I might have to add on a wing.

People are asking me what I'm feeding them to promote this great play. I'm not sure it's the food, but there is a method to the madness. This is all part of my great plan. Once they leave, I'll go into their rooms and see if they happened to leave any talent behind, because if they did, I'm going to take it and use it for myself.

Speaking of talent, I really am so amazed at the performances of these players this week. All of the officers, Allen Wronowski, Jim Remy, and myself, went out to the first tee today and watched each player begin their round.

Of course, we want to show support for what these players have accomplished to get here, but as people who appreciate great golf, we want to watch these elite players. After watching the final players tee off of the first tee, we all went out and walked the course to watch these players as much as we could. Congratulations to all of them for their success.

Par was a heck of score today with the wind and colder temperatures, and I saw that Chip Sullivan posted a 68! Wow, that is better than I can relay with words. And we are set for tomorrow for a great day of golf and ready to crown a new champion.

I've been writing all week how excited I've been to serve as a de facto host to this tournament since it is happening in my backyard. Well, it's not just me. So many friends and family members are involved and having a great time. My son is caddying for our friend Tim Weinhart, we have a number of people from my course involved as caddies or volunteers. We are all just having such a fantastic experience.

I saw our superintendent Corey Beelke, who I mentioned yesterday is caddying for Bob Ford, having lunch with Mr. Ford earlier after they finished their round. Let me tell you, his interaction with Mr. Ford will be one of the best experiences and highlights of his life. I know he is incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity.

I am now about to head to a gala dinner tonight we have each year for THE GOLF Channel. One of the great events during the dinner is the trivia contest. Let me make it clear, I'm not just going to make an appearance. I'm ready to win some prizes. I have been studying and reading like you wouldn't believe. In fact, I know what place everyone came in at the 1927 PGA Championship, but of course, I can't really tell anyone until after the dinner in case some of the other people read this before we eat!

But of course, the real excitement will take place tomorrow. As President of the PGA of America, I couldn't be more pleased with how this week has gone so far. As a golf fan who loves watching great players compete, I know the best is still to come.
