Whitcomb Blog: Sullivan's victory caps amazing week

In the final edition of his blog from Sunriver, PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb says that this event will be one he remembers and cherishes the rest of his life, and that the week is one that typifies the best of the PGA of America.

SUNRIVER, Ore. -- Wow, here we are at the end of the week. What a wonderful, amazing week. And what a finish! Chip Sullivan is a great person, a great golfer and a great champion. His story is one that should inspire golfers at every level.

I saw some amazing golf this week, and this will be a week that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life. You know, we had three different tournaments going on in one here: one for the championship, one for the 20 spots to represent the PGA of America at the PGA Championship, and one for the 10 spots on the PGA Cup Team. For a fan of golf, it just doesn't get any better.

I've been called the honorary mayor of Central Oregon this week. I have to say, I have been so pleased and so proud of how this week has gone, not just from a golf standpoint, but from how the people in the area have stepped up and made everyone feel so welcome and comfortable. We had 312 players, plus caddies, wives, children, friends and fans, and not once did I hear one complaint or negative comment about the Sunriver Resort, the staff or volunteers, or the great beauty of this region.

I don't mind saying, I hope this tournament finds its way back to the Sunriver Resort in the years to come. I think after the success of this week, the results simply speak for themselves.

It's been a long, exciting, event-filled week for me of course. You'd think I'd be exhausted. But honestly, I'm not. I'm still on an emotional charge after all I've seen and done. And I don't think it's going to slow down for awhile.

As President of the PGA, I am so pleased about this past week. As a resident of this area, I am so proud. I don't know that I could have scripted it much better. I could start to say "thank you" to everyone who deserves a thank you, but I would not finish until the end of next month. So I'll just finish up by writing that this is the type of week that typifies the best of the PGA of America. We had great golf, great fun, and a great championship. Does it really get any better than that?

See you in Tulsa!
