Dodd and Siem still lead KLM Open, McIlroy climbs up into contention

Stephen Dodd and Marcel Siem were tied for the lead after Day 2 of the European Tour’s KLM Open, while Rory McIlroy's fine second round saw him move into contention.

However, the co-leaders still have to complete their second rounds as the tournament strives to make up for the time lost on Thursday -- first to the vandalism on four greens and then to flooding. A total of 74 players will start the second round at 8:15 a.m. local time on Saturday.

Welshman Dodd, now 45 and down at 146th on this season's money list, leapt out of the pack with four birdies and an eagle in his first 10 holes. He will have five to play on the resumption while Germany's Siem -- also a former World Cup winner -- has seven to go.

On 8 under par, they were a shot in front of clubhouse leader Shiv Kapur, the Indian adding a 67 to his 66 earlier in the day.

Lurking just three strokes back is McIlroy, who fired a second-round 65 to improve from 42nd to seventh.

World No. 2 Lee Westwood is also in the hunt and would have matched his Ryder Cup teammate's 135 aggregate but for a late three-putt bogey in his 66.

McIlroy's priority after he finished was to make sure there were no more ants on him. The 22-year-old Northern Irishman's final drive ended close to an ant hill.

"I still feel there are some going up my legs," he said afterward. "I don't feel I drove the ball particularly well. There were a couple of loose shots and I got some lucky breaks."

Like McIlroy, Westwood had four birdies in seven holes on the back nine, but his only gain on the outward half was a 2 on the short fifth and his dropped shot came two holes later.

Defending champion Martin Kaymer looks certain to miss the halfway cut. Double bogey 6s on the sixth and seventh left him 6 over with seven holes remaining and he probably needed to birdie all but one of them.
