Nigel Edwards, the non-playing captain of the Britain and Ireland team that won back the Walker Cup last month, is to become the English Golf Union's new director of coaching.

The 43-year-old, currently the director of player development and coaching for the Golf Union of Wales, is expected to take up the position early next year.

It follows the resignation of Peter Mattsson, who is returning to his home country Sweden to be their director of elite performance.

"There are more players and a bigger budget in England, so it is a great career opportunity," said Edwards. "I think I can really make an impact there with the skills I have already developed.

"England are pretty successful," he added. "All you have to do is look at someone like Tom Lewis, who was part of our winning Walker Cup team and has already won a European Tour event."
