Steve Delmar shoots 67, leads event No. 2 of PGA Tournament Series

PORT ST. LUCIE (Dec. 4, 2017) – Steve Delmar’s swing may not have been where he wanted it Monday, but when you make more than 100 feet of putts, it doesn’t matter.

Delmar, an assistant coach for the Maryland men’s golf team, shot a 5-under 67 to take a three-shot lead after the first round of Event No. 2 of the PGA Tournament Series at PGA Golf Club.

“I actually hit it better last week (when he finished T13 in Event No. 1), but I made everything,” said Delmar of Gaithersburg, Md. “My closest birdie putt was from 10 feet. Everything else was 25 feet or more. I wish I had days like this more often.”

Delmar birdied 6 of his first 11 holes. He bogeyed the par-3 13th, however, and finished with five pars. He wasn’t disappointed with the score.

“I could argue I shouldn’t have been six-under through 11 holes because of all the putts I made,” Delmar said.

Danny Balin, who won Event No. 1 last week and grew up 15 miles away from Delmar in Maryland, is among nine players three shots back with a 70. Balin had two late birdies.

Also with 70s were Andy Hanson of Mequon, Wisc., Keith Bennett of Seattle, Brett Walker of Jupiter, Jonathan Mansfield of Clearwater, Casey Pyne of Bloomington, Ind., Zac Oakley of Stuart and Shawn Powers of Greenwich, Ct. Hanson was 3-over through four holes, but rebounded with eagles at the seventh and 10th holes.

Five players are tied for 10th place at 71: Rich Berberian, Charles Meola, Rob Krajewski, Joshua Rackley and Derek Sanders.

The final round is Tuesday. The winner receives $5,000.
