PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Kyle Stanley’s victory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open vaulted him to the top of the U.S. points list for the 2012 Ryder Cup. Meanwhile, Scotland’s Paul Lawrie climbed up to fourth on the European Ryder Cup points list with his win at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters.

Players earn points based on their prize money earned in the 2011 major championships and in official events played throughout 2012 up through the conclusion of the PGA Championship on Aug. 12. The top eight players will earn automatic berths, and Captain Davis Love III will select four players as his captain’s picks to round out the team on Sept. 4.

The 2012 Ryder Cup will be played Sept. 28-30 at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill. Here are the current standings:

There are two ways to earn a spot on the European team. First is via the Ryder Cup European Points List, in which players gain points based on their performance in European Tour events from Sept. 1, 2011 through the end of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles on Aug. 26. The top five players on that list will receive automatic berths.

Second is via the Ryder Cup World Points List, in which players accumulate world ranking points from Sept. 1, 2011, through the Johnnie Walker Championship. After the five players from the European list are set, the top five remaining players from the World list will earn automatic berths. Captain Jose Maria Olazabal will then select two players as his captain’s picks on Aug. 27.
