All of Ireland -- heck, all of Europe -- rejoiced when Padraig Harrington broke Europe's eight-year major championship drought and became the first Irishman to claim the Claret Jug since 1947. And now that he's got one major in his pocket, he promptly announced that he's eager to win more.
Even after that disastrous double bogey on the 72nd hole, Padraig Harrington refused to allow himself to think he had blown the Open Championship. When he got a second chance, he kept his level head and earned his first major title.
Sergio Garcia still can't believe the amazing turn of events that led to his playoff loss. This one hurt bad, he admitted afterward, as he struggled to digest all the big bounces and even bigger shots on an unforgettable Sunday at Carnoustie.
Tiger Woods knew he needed a world-class charge Sunday, but it never came. His bid to become the first player in 50 years to win three straight Opens ended with a pedestrian 70, as he finished tied for 12th, five shots off the pace.
Ernie Els rocketed into contention Sunday with a front-nine 33, but wound up tied for fourth. A crucial bogey on the short 13th did him in, he said, but he believes his strong showing this week proves he can again win major titles.
