Since its inception in 1878, Royal Troon has proved a demanding test for the finest shotmakers. The Open Championship was first played at Troon in 1923, and returns for the eighth time in 2004. The 'Royal' prefix was added to commemorate its centenary in 1978. Tom Watson captured the fourth of his five Open titles here in 1982.
