The course is located on the edge of the town, 55 miles from Edinburgh Airport via the M90 and A91. The Old Course has played host to the championship on a regular basis since 1873 when it first moved from its home at Prestwick. Tiger Woods won the latest Open over the historic links in the millennium championship of 2000 with a record breaking total of 269.

The course is located on Meols Drive (A540) between Hoylake and West Kirby, 10 minutes from Junction 2 of the M53 and less than 1 hour from Manchester International Airport. Royal Liverpool Golf Club was founded in 1869 and was responsible for inaugurating the Amateur Championship in 1885. It staged the first of its 10 Opens in 1897 when a member of the club, Harold Hilton, beat James Braid by a single shot. Peter Thomson won the third his five Open titles on the course in 1956 before Roberto de Vicenzo completed the list of Hoylake champions in 1967.
