Former major winners Pavin, Janzen fail to qualify

Former U.S. Open winners Corey Pavin and Lee Janzen were among seven former major champions who missed out on qualifying Tuesday for the 134th Open Championship, with Paving losing out in a playoff for the final spot.

Corey Pavin, the 1995 U.S. Open, lost out in a playoff for the two final places in The Open at St Andrews that were on offer at International Final Qualifying in the United State played Tuesday over 36 holes at Canoe Brook, N.J.

None of the seven former major championship winners taking part were able to win one of the 14 top places that would have guaranteed a chance to play in the 134th Open over the Old Course. That means no return to the home of golf for Pavin, Tom Kite, Lee Janzen, Steve Elkington, Bob Tway, Mark Brooks and Bernhard Langer.

The leading 12 players, led by the U.S.'s Tom Pernice Jr with rounds of 64-70 and Geoff Ogilvie of Australia with 67-67 for aggregates of 134, were home and dry after the regulation 36 holes, but seven players tied on 138 went into a sudden-death play-off to determine the final two qualifying places.

In addition to Pernice and Ogilvie, the leading 12 were Jason Allred (U.S.), Joe Durant (U.S.), Duffy Waldorf (U.S.), Alex Cejka (Germany), Scott Gutschewski (U.S.), Tom Byrum (U.S.), Daniel Chopra (Sweden), Robert Allenby (Australia), Scott Hend (Australia) and Bo Van Pelt (U.S.).

The successful pair in the playoff were Wilhelm Schauman of Sweden and Richard Barcelo of the U.S.
