Royal Liverpool
Royal Liverpool Golf Club was founded in 1869 and became famous for inaugurating the Amateur Championship in 1885. The Open was first played there in 1897 and won by Harold Hilton, a member of the club, who beat James Braid by one shot. The course measured 6,150 yards and Hilton, an amateur, had rounds of 80-75-84-75 for a 314 total.
