This is the start of the famous St. Andrews loop, a run of short par 4s and par 3s where the foundation of any winning score has to be made. The tee shot target area is beyond a large mound and short of the wide, deep-faced Shell bunker that fronts the green. From there it's no more than a lob wedge for most players to a green that drops away to the back and right beyond a raised frontal ridge.

By Keith Mackie, golf historian and writer from a well-established golfing family in St. Andrews.
