Open Champion to join field in PGA Grand Slam of Golf

Whoever ends up hoisting the coveted Claret Jug at St. Andrews will also walk away with one of the most coveted perks in all of golf -- a berth in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., -- It was a graphic display at just how hard it is to qualify for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, which Tom Watson was on the verge of doing at last year’s British Open. Had Watson made that short par putt on Turnberry’s 18th hole, his sixth British Open title would have clinched his first berth in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf since 1982.

Instead, Watson and millions of television viewers worldwide watched the putt slide by, then saw Stewart Cink clinch his first berth in the most difficult tournament in the world to qualify for, when he prevailed in a four-hole playoff. Cink and Watson will be at storied St. Andrews, July 15-18, seeking that elusive Open Championship and the even more elusive berth in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf that goes with winning the oldest title in golf.

Awaiting the Open Champion is that berth in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, which once again returns to Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda. Last year, Cink finished third behind “Champion of Champions” Lucas Glover and 2007 PGA Grand Slam of Golf Champion Angel Cabrera in the annual gathering of major champions.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf will once again air on TNT, where it is broadcast in prime time to more than 89 million U.S. homes and an international audience of more than 100 countries. Comprised of the four major championship winners, the 36-hole PGA Grand Slam of Golf provides the best players in the world the opportunity to earn a spot in the most elusive foursome in all of golf.

Joining Masters Champion Phil Mickelson, U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell and the Open Champion in that foursome will be the winner of the 92nd PGA Championship, Aug. 12-15 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.

Should a player win more than one major Championship this season, the foursome will be completed through the Major Champions Points List composed of past major Champions who compete in the current year’s majors.

Past PGA Grand Slam of Golf Champions include: Glover, Mickelson, Cabrera, Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Tom Lehman, Ben Crenshaw, Greg Norman, Nick Price and Ian Woosnam.
