2012 National Car Rental Assistant PGA Championship presented by Cobra Puma Golf

Format: 72 holes of stroke play. Following the first 36 holes, the field will be reduced to the lowest 70 scorers and ties. In the event of a tie for first place after 72 holes, there will be a hole-by-hole playoff.
What's at Stake: $100,000 will be distributed to the 2012 field of 126 competitors. The champion will receive $9,000 and a spot in the 2013 PGA Professional National Championship next summer at Sunriver Resort in Oregon.

SUNDAY: Scott closes out dominant victory with near-record performance
Jake Scott of Strongsville, Ohio, cruised to victory on Sunday, using a final-round 70 to finish at 17-under 271. His seven-shot gap over runner-up Ryan Vermeer of  Nebraska missed the tournament’s record for total margin of victory by a single shot. Scooter Buhrman and Charles Frost tied for third.

SATURDAY: Scott extends lead to four over Vermeer after third round
Jake Scott of Strongsville, Ohio, and Ryan Vermeer of Omaha, Neb., have separated themselves from the rest of the field after three rounds at PGA Golf Club. Scott fired a 67 Saturday to build a four-shot lead over Vermeer, who carded a 70, with third-placed Scooter Buhrman four behind Vermeer.

FRIDAY: Championship rookie Scott of Ohio grabs slim 36-hole lead over Vermeer
Jake Scott of Strongsville, Ohio, grabbed the 36-hole lead on Friday, posting a second-round 65 for a 10-under 134 total. He has a one-stroke edge over first-round leader Ryan Vermeer of Omaha, Neb., who shot a 69. Zach Johnson of Utah and Richard Terga of Florida are tied for third.

THURSDAY: Vermeer of Nebraska grabs first-round lead over Pancrantz of Arizona
Ryan Vermeer of Omaha, Neb., took advantage of benign morning conditions at PGA Golf Club, posting an opening-round, 6-under-par 66 for a two-stroke lead. Vermeer leads Bobby Pancratz of Scottsdale, Ariz., who is alone in second after posting a 68. A group of six players are another stroke back of Vermeer.

For the 17th consecutive year, PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., will host the 2012 National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship presented by Cobra Puma Golf, a national championship for 126 PGA assistant professionals and apprentices. The 2012 field will feature the top four finishers from last year's Championship as well as 122 players who advanced through their PGA Section Championships.

For nearly 40 years, tournament has produced outstanding PGA Professionals who have gone onto successful careers in teaching and administering the game, as well as competing at the highest level. Past competitors or champions include: Loren Roberts (Champion, 1979); Fred Funk (Champion, 1984); Rich Beem (Third, 1998); and Tim Thelen (Champion, 2009).

Phelps of New York set to make history by completing rare "season triple"
It takes more than a proper alignment of the stars to complete Rob Phelps' rare golf feat. The 54-year-old PGA assistant professional at Onondaga Golf & Country Club in Fayetteville, N.Y., also has the game to earn a berth in three PGA of America National Championships in the same season. After playing in the PGA Professional National Championship in June and the Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship in October, he’ll wrap up his amazing trifecta this week.

Trio of 2011 runners-up looking to break through after near-miss last season
Scott Berliner of Albany, N.Y.; Tyler Hitchcock of Orlando, Fla.; and Richard Terga of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., were among five players who finished a single shot behind winner Frank Bensel last season. All three of them are seeking a bit of redemption – and, mostly, to improve their finish by one single, crucial spot, as they return to PGA Golf Club this week.

National Car Rental has been named an Official Partner and the Official Rental Car of The PGA of America. The agreement features National Car Rental serving as the Official Rental Car of the PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, an Official Partner of the 2012 and 2014 Ryder Cup and the title sponsor of the National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship.
