McCarron played golf from the age of three, and was a member of the UCLA golf team, but quit playing after leaving college in 1988 due to poor putting and burnout. He went to work in his father's clothing business and did not play again until 1992. After watching senior golfers use long putters, McCarron began to think that the long putter could solve his own putting problems. . . He built himself a long putter in his garage and almost won the U.S. Mid-Amateur later that year. He turned professional right after that and joined the PGA Tour in 1995 after finishing 31st in Q-School. He almost lost his Tour card at the end of 1995, placed 212th on the money list going into the final two events, but finished 3rd in Las Vegas, the $108,000 check moved him into 128th place. He was able to retain his card when he finished T38th and won $4,620 at the last event in Texas. . .Played at UCLA when the team won the 1988 NCAA Championship. . . Played on the Canadian Tour in 1993 and the Hooters Tour in 1994. . .Won the 1994 Long Beach Open. . .Plays with one of the longest putters on the PGA Tour. |
