After his family moved from Laurel, Neb., to Palm Beach, Fla., the teenage Calcavecchia was able to play golf every day, during the summer months playing as many as 72 holes a day. He turned professional in 1981 and qualified for the PGA Tour, but his first four years were a struggle, and he was forced to go back to Q-school after every year. . .When he failed to qualify for the 1986 season Calcavecchia caddied for his friend Ken Green in a handful of tournaments and practiced more than ever. He four-spotted at Doral that year, led the first round with a 65 and ended up tied for 8th. By the end of the summer he had a conditional card and ended the season 58th on the money list. . .The highlight of his career came in 1989 when he won the British Open, beating Greg Norman and Wayne Grady in a four hole playoff. Daughter Britney was born three weeks after that victory at Troon. . . .Member of 1987, '89 '91 and 2002 Ryder Cup Teams. . .* Member of 1998 Presidents Cup Team. . .Finished second in All-Around stats category in 1996 and 5th in 1997. . .Had finished in the top 50 on the money list every year since 1987 until he finished 53 on the 2002 money list. |
