At age 11, Maruyama watched Tom Watson win the 1981 Masters and decided that he wanted to be a professional golfer. In 1997 he won three of Japan's four major tournaments and finished second on the money list, behind, of course, Jumbo Ozaki, who has anointed Maruyama as his successor as the dominant Japanese player. Maruyama has proved himself to be especially skilled at match play, his 5-0 record at the 1998 Presidents Cup was the best of any player on either side, and he made it to the quarterfinals of the 1999 Anderson Consulting Match Play Championship. Getting to the quarterfinals of the Match Play he earned enough money to get his tour card for 2000. Even though his full-time residence is Chiba, Japan, he maintains a second resident in Beverly Hills, Calif. . .Member of 1998 & 2000 Presidents Cup Team. |
