Estes was only four when his father took him to the golf course for the first time. By age seven, he was playing in junior events around his hometown of Abilene and dreaming of playing the PGA Tour. . . He was also an exceptional basketball player, earning all-district honors his junior and senior year. Estes played golf for the University of Texas, winning the Jack Nicklaus and Fred Haskins awards as the college player of the year. After leaving Texas in 1988, he finished 1989 as the Rookie of the Year, 102nd on the money list, having lost a playoff at the B.C. Open to Mike Hulbert. Although Estes would contend many more times, his first two PGA Tour victories were wire-to-wire performances. |
