Funk started to play golf at about age 10, picking up the game on his own because it looked like something he wanted to do; by 14 he knew that he wanted to play on the PGA Tour. He tried for his Tour card in 1984, '85 and '86 with little success, and his dream of playing on the Tour suffered a serious setback when he tore a rotator cuff in 1987. . . He became the golf coach at the University of Maryland, and was successful competing as a club pro, winning the 1984 Foot-Joy National Assistants Championship and the Maryland State Open in 1984 and 1987. He also won the Mid-Atlantic PGA Championship three times. In 1988 he finally succeeded at Q-school, and then succeeded again the next year. In the 1990 season he had three top 10 finishes, and continued to improve, winning for the first time in 1992 at the Houston Open. . . Led the PGA Tour in driving accuracy in 1995, '96, '99 & 2000, 2nd in '97, 3rd in 2001 & finished 7th in '98. . . Between 1990 & 2002 played in 413 PGA Tour events, more than anybody else in that time period. |
