Took up golf while in high school after years of playing baseball. His game did not really come together until he was in college, when Senior PGA Tour member Jim Ferree helped get him started. Florida Southern coach Charlie Matlock then became the main influence for Mediate. He started using the long putter to save his back, and became the first player to win on the PGA Tour with a long putter when he won the 1991 Doral-Ryder Open. . .Missed most of 1994 season with ruptured disk which he underwent surgery in July of '94. |
