Roberts did not start to play golf seriously until he was 16 years old. In high school he played a lot of tennis and baseball until his golf coach convinced him to concentrate on golf. . . After high school, Roberts attended Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, where he played varsity golf for two years before the school dropped its golf program. He then turned professional and worked as an assistant at the San Luis Obispo Country Club. . .Credited his victory in the 1979 FootJoy PGA Assistant Professional Championship in jump-starting his career. . .Overall, Roberts has been to Q-school six times, succeeding three of those times. . .Regarded as one of the hardest workers on tour, as well as one of the best putters, he has been in the top 100 of the money list every year since 1988. Prior to his win in the 1994 Nestle Invitational, he was the leading money-winner on the PGA Tour without a victory. Almost pulled a double victory in '94 when he lost in the playoff for the U.S. Open. He is nicknamed "Boss of the Moss" for his great putting skills. He's had problems with a bulging disc in his back the last several years. . .Missed the Masters in 1998 when he broke ribs while sneezing. . . Member of 1995 Ryder Cup Team at Oak Hill Country Club. . .Member of 1994 & 2000 Presidents Cup Team. |
