1997 U.S. Junior Amateur - runner-up, was beaten by Jason Allred, 1 down. . . . Birdied the 16th and 17th holes to square the match after Allred had scored the match's first birdie with a 30-yard chip shot on the 15th . . .Won the 1998 U.S. Amateur Public Links, defeated Jason Dufner, 3 and 2. He never trailed in the match and finished the morning 18 with a 2 up lead. At one point in the afternoon session, he pushed his lead to 5-up but Dufner won the 12th and 13th holes to pull within three. The pair halved the 14th and 15th holes with par and Immelman notched his first USGA championship after they both parred the 16th. . . .Ever since he started swinging a club at the age of five, Trevor has not only wanted to be a golf professional but also to be the best. "I have never had anything else in mind," he said. . . He followed in the footsteps of his golf teaching brother Mark, nine years older, who is still and has always been his coach. Was off scratch at the age of 12 and played the African Junior Golf Association Tour from 13 to 17. "During the summer vacation there were tournaments every week, so it was basically like playing a pro tour." In 1996, made the South African team at the age of 17 and played in the Eisenhower Trophy in Chile. Perhaps 1997 was his defining year when he lost in three finals, the Amateur Championship at Royal St George's, the New Zealand Amateur, and the U. S. Junior. Won the 2000 Vodacom Players Championship in his native South Africa. . . .Won the 1996 Junior PGA Championship, joining 2001 PGA Champion David Toms, who won the title in 1984. . . Naturally a lefthander but plays right-handed. |
