Winner of the 1997 U.S. Amateur Public Links, he hails from South Africa. Moved to North Carolina in 1995 to attend North Carolina State, in 1996, was selected NCAA first team All-American. Was an accomplished junior player in South Africa, winning many match play titles. Has had five holes-in-one, the first when he was just eight years old. Was the South African Junior Player of the year in 1993. Played for South Africa in the 1996 World Amateur Team Championship. . .Not likely to forget Durban Country Club in a hurry. Born and raised close to Durban, he won three successive Natal Junior titles between the ages of 16 and 18. Also holds the amateur record there with a 66. Won twice on the Buy.Com Tour in the United States in 2000 to finish third on the money list to gain exemption on the US PGA Tour. Suffered a serious wrist injury in the 2001 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am - his third and last start of the season. Had surgery to repair tendon damage in March. Returned to action in the first event of 2002 at Durban Country Club and won the Bell's South African Open. Won the pre-qualifier to gain entry then secured his maiden victory on The European Tour by two strokes from England's Steve Webster. |
