A former bank teller, Austin finished 23rd on 1994 Nike Tour money list with $72,206. Prior to 1995, his only PGA Tour start was the 1992 Southern Open were he missed the cut. He was the medalist at the 1994 PGA Tour Qualifying school. With his win in the Buick Open and earnings of over $700,000 he earned Rookie of the Year honors in 1995. Tore tendons and cartilage in left knee during 1987 Qualifying tournament. Injury sidelined him for two years. . . . First injured knee as 11 year-old playing little league baseball.
