Garcia plays at the Mediterraneo Club de Golf in Borriol, Spain, where his father, Victor, is the golf professional, and where Sergio was club champion at age 12. Known as "El Nino" with cause, he started playing golf at age 3, won his club championship at age 12, and played off scratch at age 13. He made his European Tour debut at age 15 at the 1995 Turespana Open Mediterrania, making the cut and finishing at 4-over-par 292. Garcia then played in his first major championship at age 16, the 1996 British Open, but it wasn't until he was a 17-year-old amateur that he won his first professional tournament, the 1997 Catalonian Open (a Spanish PGA event), shooting three successive rounds of 64. He holds the European Tour record for the lowest score ever by an amateur, 277, at the 1998 Peugeot Spanish Open, where he finished T-34th. He owns the same record on the Nike Tour with his 272 total at the 1998 Nike Greensboro Open, his T-3 finish the lowest ever by an amateur on that tour. . . Garcia won the 1995 European Amateur, at age 15 the youngest winner of that tournament, and in 1998 won the British Amateur. at the 1998 U.S. Amateur, lost a semifinals match by Tom McKnight after defeating Matt Kuchar in the quarterfinals. . .In amateur tournaments in 1997 and '98 he played in 21 events, winning 17 of them. Was runner-up 3 times and in 3rd place once. His scoring average in those tournaments was 69.65 and in 52 rounds been under par 42 times and broken 70, 32 times. His match play record is 32 wins and only one loss. . .Turned professional right after the 1999 Masters. . .Member of the 1999 and 2002 European Ryder Cup Team.
