Enjoyed a superb amateur career, finishing runner-up in the 1997 U.S. Junior Amateur. . .Won the 1998 U.S. Amateur Public Links. . . Ever since he started swinging a club at the age of five, Immelman has not only wanted to be a golf professional but also to be the best. . . He followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Mark, a teaching professional, who is still and has always been his coach. Was off scratch at the age of 12 and played the African Junior Golf Association Tour from 13 to 17. . . In 1996, made the South African team at the age of 17 and played in the Eisenhower Trophy in Chile. Perhaps 1997 was his defining year when he lost in three finals, the Amateur Championship at Royal St George's, the New Zealand Amateur, and the U. S. Junior. Won the 2000 Vodacom Players Championship in his native South Africa. . . Won the 1996 PGA Junior Championship. . . Naturally a lefthander but plays right-handed.
