Like fellow Australian, Richard Green, O'Hern is a left-hander. Unlike Green, he can communicate in Japanese. Started golf aged nine, following the sporting example of his dad, a three handicapper. Father played baseball for Australia and son for Western Australia. It was a toss up between turning professional at baseball, tennis or golf. Golf won. Came through European Tour Qualifying School at first attempt in 1998 and has come close to making his winning breakthrough on a number of occasions, twice finishing runner-up in 2003.
