Player Notes

One of the most consistent players on the European Tour, Montgomerie led the Order of Merit for a record seven years in a row. He played college golf in the United States at Houston Baptist University, and enjoyed a fine amateur career, winning the 1987 Scottish Amateur and the '85 Scottish Stroke Play Championship. . . He also was a member of the 1985 and '87 Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup Team. . .Named the 1988 Rookie of the Year in Europe and recorded his first victory in 1989 at the Portuguese Open, winning by 11 strokes. Since 1988, Montgomerie has moved up the European Order of Merit every year with a 52nd place finish in 1988, 25th place finish in 1989, 14th place in 1990, 4th place in 1991. He had a slow start in 1991 after the death of his mother, then narrowly lost the Volvo PGA Championship, when Seve Ballesteros beat him in a playoff. After that he won the Scandinavian Masters and finished in the top 10 ten times and finished third on the Order of Merit. . . Member of the 1991, '93, '95, '97, '99, 2002 & 2004 European Ryder Cup Team. . . Won the money title on the PGA European Tour for seven straight years between 1993 and 1999.
