Player Notes

One of the heroes of Europe's record-breaking Ryder Cup victory over the United States at Oakland Hills Country Club in September 2004. Together with fellow rookie Paul Casey, produced a pivotal victory in the Saturday morning four-ball session over Chad Campbell and Jim Furyk. One down with two to play, and with the American team as a whole sensing a revival, Howell produced a stunning six iron tee shot from 203 yards to five feet and holed the birdie putt to win the hole, before partner Casey won the last to give Bernhard Langer's Team a crucial point. Finished in the top 25 17 times over the year including in the BMW International Open where his tie for 22nd finally secured his automatic right to be in Detroit. Finished the year on a high too with an excellent third place finish in the WGC - American Express Championship in Ireland and a share of fifth in the Volvo Masters Andalucia. Made up for 2003 when he narrowly missed out on the top 15 by only ?359 (250). Ended that year on a positive note however, being part of the winning Great Britain and Ireland team in The Seve Trophy match in Spain which made up for the unfortunate events of April 2002 when he suffered a broken arm after tripping over when jogging, thus missing the chance to play in The Seve Trophy that year at Druids Glen. In his amateur days, won the British Boys Championship in 1993 before collecting two and a half points out of three in the 1995 Walker Cup victory over a Tiger Woods-led United States at Royal Porthcawl. Collected his first professional victory in November 1998 when he won the MasterCard Australian PGA Championship by seven strokes, three months before his only European Tour win to date, the 1999 Dubai Desert Classic.
