Born in South Africa and moved to England at the age of five, and at that time began playing golf. . . Always will be remembered for finishing T-4 as an amateur in the 1998 British Open. Turned professional the next day. . .Finally delivered the huge potential which first became apparent in the 1998 Open Championship by capturing the Dunhill Championship at the start of 2002 in his hometown, Johannesburg. . . Went on to win the Nashua Masters title in South Africa and the Crowns Tournament in Japan before winning his second European Tour title - the Victor Chandler British Masters - after an epic tussle with his close friend Ian Poulter, establishing himself as a genuine contender on the world stage. Underlined the fact in 2003 with his joint fifth finish in his US Open Championship debut, joining Fredrik Jacobson as the highest placed European at Olympia Fields Country Club. Also, partnering Paul Casey, helped England to second place in the WGC - World Cup at the end of the season, improving on their third place of the previous year. Moved to England from South Africa at the age of five, when he started to play seriously at Hartley Wintney GC near his Hampshire home. First swung a club at 11 months when his father, Ken, handed him a plastic club. Broke 70 for the first time at age 11. Handicap of plus three at age 14 and played in 1997 Walker Cup at only 17 and ten days. Brother, Brandon is an ex-professional in South Africa. Was coached by his late father, who died of leukemia in 2002, and David Leadbetter, with whom he began working in 1998 - the year he took the world by storm, chipping in at the last to tie fourth in the Open Golf Championship at Royal Birkdale. Won Silver Medal as leading amateur. Turned professional the next day. Missed card at Qualifying School in 1998 but finished fourth in 1999 and ninth in 2000 after coming within five spots of retaining his card.
