Hole 10
579 yards
par 5

With the crowd 10 deep, Tiger Woods got off to a rocky start, while Phil Mickelson and Geoff Ogilvy each got into red figures on the first hole. Woods drove into the left rough, his ball bouncing off a tree. After punching out, his third shot flew over the green. His chip rolled well past the hole and he two-putted for an opening bogey.

Mickelson, meanwhile, pulled his drive into the right rough, hit a 3-wood to 20 feet and two-putted for a birdie.

Mickelson smashed a driver to the middle of the fairway, while Woods put his 5-wood also in the short grass. The crowd erupted when Mickelson hit his short-iron approach to 5 feet. Tiger's approach stopped 12 feet from the hole. After Woods and caddie Steve Williams studied his birdie putt from all angles, Woods just missed on the right side, then tapped in for par. Mickelson then canned his birdie putt as the crowd went wild.

Both Woods and Mickelson hit driver safely in the fairway. Woods was about 50 yards ahead of Mickelson on right side by cutting the corner of the dogleg. Mickelson's second shot stopped 40 from the cup, and he two-putted for a routine par. Woods picked up his first birdie of the day when his approached flew right over the flag and stopped 8 feet from the hole, and he made the putt. Ogilvy made birdie to get to 2-under.

Ogilvy put his tee shot into the right bunker. Woods' tee shot flew long and left through the green and into the thick rough. Mickelson's shot sailed straight for the pin but stopped about 18 feet away. Ogilvy played a great bunker shot to within four feet and made his putt, but not before it danced around the hole first. Woods chipped to 10 feet and made the putt to save his par, while Mickelson just missed his birdie chance and tapped in for a par.

Hole 14

par 5

Woods got into red figures thanks to a remarkable recovery from a horrible lie in the left rough. His tee shot landed just two yards off the fairway but settled into very thick grass. His next shot advanced just 80 yards and stayed in the rough. From a much better lie, Woods played his third shot to 25 feet and made the putt for his second birdie in three holes. Mickelson also missed the fairway to the left with his tee shot, and his ball struck a woman spectator before settling behind a tree. He played a huge cut shot that flew into the right rough. His third shot wound up in the left rough just short of the green, about 15 feet from the hole. He nearly chipped in by settled for a tap-in par. Ogilvy, meanwhile, placed his tee shot in the fairway, pounded a long iron to lay-up range but in the left rough, went long with his third then almost holed a flop shot that stopped 6 feet from the hole. He then missed the putt for his first bogey of the day.

Woods is officially on fire. Despite hitting a long iron off the tee and into the left rough, he hit his second shot to 6 feet and made the putt for his third birdie in four holes. Mickelson, on the other hand, opted to hit driver and smashed one down the middle and to within about 60 yards of the green. However, his pitch stopped 10 from the hole and he two-putted for a par. Ogilvy placed his long-iron tee shot in the middle of the fairway, hit his approach to 8 feet and two-putted for par.

Woods and Mickelson each found the fairway off the tee, Woods with a 5-wood and Mickelson with a 3-wood. Ogilvy, however, put his long-iron tee shot deep into the trees in the left rough. Ogilvy was forced to punch out, but his ball scooted across the fairway and into the rough. His third shot fell short of the green, he chipped to 10 feet, missed the putt and carded a deflating double-bogey. Woods put his approach 25 feet right of the hole and two-putted for par, while Mickelson hit his second shot short left and in the rough. Lefty played a nifty flop shot to 8 feet and made the putt to save par.

Hole 17

par 3

Woods hit his tee shot safely on the green, some 30 feet above the hole. Mickelson, though, yelled "Oh no," after his ball sailed into the left rough. Mickelson chipped to 1 foot for a par, while Woods' birdie putt lipped out, prompting him to bend over, place his hands on his knees and shake his head. Meanwhile, Ogilvy left his 40-foot birdie putt a foot short and tapped in for par.

Tiger ripped a 3-wood tee shot and twirled his club, which meant he liked it. Mickelson, on the other hand, pulled his driver way right and behind three trees. Ogilvy hit 3-wood down the middle of the fairway. Mickelson's second shot from trampled rough behind three trees split the uprights, landed on green but ran through into the first cut of rough. He chipped to a foot and tapped in for par. Woods' birdie putt from 25 just missed and he settled for par. Ogilvy righted his ship with a second shot to 15 feet and made putt for birdie.

With the famed Wanamaker Trophy within sight to the right of the first tee box and the crowds swelling by the minute, Ogilvy was the only one of the three to find the fairway with his tee shot. Woods put his 3-wood stinger shot into the left bunker, while Mickelson hit his driver into the left rough and a terrible lie. Tiger played a nice bunker shot onto the green, 40 feet from the hole. Mickelson also played a good shot to the front left of the green, 50 feet away from the hole. They each two-putted for par then watched Ogilvy make his second straight birdie after a 25 footer that fell into the cup.

Hole 2

Ogilvy and Woods each hit lovely tee shots that flew right at flag, Ogilvy's stopping about twelve feet past and Tiger's 5 feet closer. But Mickelson missed the green to the right and his ball settled in the fringe. Lefty's chip from 40 feet stopped 6 feet short and he missed the putt for his first bogey of the day. Ogilvy just missed his birdie attempt, and Tiger lipped out his putt for a par.

Hole 3
414 yards
par 4

Ogilvy and Woods each hit fairway woods off the tee and found the fairway. Mickelson also hit a fairway wood, but his faded and found the left rough where the trees were once again a problem. Tiger's second shot ran to the back right of green, and Ogilvy's landed in the right rough. Mickelson, after his second shot stopped short of the green, elected to putt from 60 feet and just missed the hole. Ogilvy nearly chipped in from 40 feet, while Tiger's putt from 35 feet just missed. All three players made par.

Hole 4

Mickelson continues to struggle to find any consistency but he's been saved by his amazing short game. His driver once again found the right rough and his second shot fell short of the green and into a bad lie in the rough. His chip stopped 1 foot from the hole for a tap-in par. Woods hit driver down the left-center of the fairway and his ball just trickled into the first cut of rough. From there he played his approach to the back right of the green, his ball stopping 15 feet from the hole. A neat chip to 2 feet left him with an easy par. Ogilvy continued his impressive rebound from that double-bogey on 16 with another birdie, this one after an approach to 12 feet and true putt.

Hole 5

The gallery following this group is large but not as rowdy as you would expect. Plus there doesn't appear to be a fan favorite. Mickelson and Ogilvy certainly gave them something to cheer about when each found the fairway with their driver tee shots and reached the green in two with their approaches. Ogilvy had 40 feet for eagle but missed it left and made his second straight birdie. Mickelson missed his eagle attempt from 20 feet but also converted his birdie. Woods, meanwhile, hit driver into the right rough, laid up but hit it into the heavy rough on the left, 45 shorts short of the green. His flop shot came up way short and stayed in the rough. His fourth shot stopped 4 feet left of the hole and he saved par.

Hole 6
474 yards
par 4

Ogilvy once again took a step backward, this time the result of a poor tee shot that sailed way left, forcing him to take a free drop. He tried to punch out but his ball stayed in the rough. His third shot fell short of the green by 3 feet, and his putt from off the green missed for a bogey 5. Meanwhile, Mickelson missed another fairway right but he played his approach to the left part of the green and two-putted from 30 feet for par. Woods hit a low drive that was not long but found the middle of the fairway. His approach stopped 25 feet from the hole and he two-putted for par.

Hole 7
587 yards
par 5

All three players birdied this par 5, but Woods sent the gallery into a frenzy when his second-shot mid-iron approach stopped 8 feet behind the hole. Ogilvy also reached the green in two, his ball coming to rest 25 feet away. From there he two-putted for birdie. Mickelson, though, drove into the deep rough on the left behind a huge tree. He carved a fairway wood around the left side of the tree to just short of the green. A nice chip left him with a short birdie putt. Woods's eagle try missed on the left edge.

Hole 8

All three players reached the green with their tee shots, Mickelson's to 15 feet, Ogilvy's to 18 feet and Woods' to 40. All three made routine two-putt pars.

Hole 9
435 yards
par 4

Woods and Ogilvy both found the fairway with their tee shots, but Mickelson once again missed it and found the left rough. All three players reached the green with their approaches but neither had a realistic shot at birdie as the closest was Ogilvy at 25 feet. Mickelson nearly pulled off a stunner with his 40-foot birdie attempt but his ball rolled over the hole, hit the back of the cup and stayed out. Woods two-putted from 35 feet for his par, while Ogilvy did the same from 25.
