Started playing golf at age 12, because his grandmother and aunt were enthusiasts. Born in United States and only spent the first six months of his life in this country while his father was employed as chief mechanic for the Mario Andretti's motor racing team. Winner of the 1999 Australian Open against a field that included Greg Norman and Colin Montgomerie, played with Monty in the final round. He was the first amateur winner of the Australian Open in 39 years and the youngest champion in the event's history. His winning score was 14-under, 274 on Royal Sydney. Qualified for Victorian Open in 1997 at age 15, holds distinction of being the youngest winner in the 65-year history of the Victorian State Junior. Youngest person to receive a Victorian Institute of Sport Scholarship (at age 16). Played in the 1998 U.S. Junior Amateur, in qualifying shot 135, which up until 1999 was the lowest qualifying score in that event. Lost in the finals to James Oh, 1-up. Earned his way on to the PGA Tour via a 10th-place finish on the Nationwide Tour money list. Posted three runners-up finishes at the Knoxville Open, Bank of America Monterey Peninsula Classic and the Gila River Classic. Closed out season with four top-15s to earn Player of the Month for October . . Made the cut in two of his three PGA Tour appearances with his best finish, a T44 at the Reno-Tahoe Open. In 2001, played in nine PGA Tour events and teamed with Adam Scott for a T14 at the WGC-EMC World Cup. Winner of the 2001 Greg Norman Holden International. Finished as the 2000-01 PGA Tour of Australasian Order of Merit Champion. Made one cut, a T57 at Honda Classic, in nine PGA Tour appearances as an amateur in 2000. Stayed with countryman Greg Norman during Honda Classic, his first PGA Tour event. Highlight of the Year came when he defended his Australian Open title.
