Started playing golf at the age of four when, armed with a club, he would follow his dad around Bootle Golf Club. At the age of six he won his first tournament-an under 14s tournament at North Berwick and hasn't looked back. Prominent Member of the victorious Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team in Aug. 2001. Turned professional the following week and although did not earn enough money to secure his playing privileges for 2002 in his seven starts, made up for that at the Qualifying School Finals where he took the third card. Completed a highly successful first season on The European Tour by finishing in 36th place on the Order of Merit, a performance which earned him the honor of being named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year for 2002. Further progress in 2003 hindered by glandular fever and after a moderate 2004, he made a spectacular start to 2005, winning his maiden European Tour victory when he held off Colin Montgomerie and Maarten Lafeber to win the Caltex Masters, presented by Carlsberg, Singapore 2005. Also finished tied third in the Nissan Irish Open and tied second in the Linde German Masters, the latter performance securing his debut in the Seve Trophy where he won three points out of five for Great Britain and Ireland. Protégé of six-time major champion Nick Faldo, who recognized him as a special talent during the Faldo Junior Series and took him under his wing. Since then, Faldo has coached him in every aspect of a professional golfer's life. Coached by David Leadbetter and helped on his fitness and mental approach by Jamil Qureshi. Also an accomplished flute player having reached Grade Six after taking it up at Primary School after his dad, a huge Beatles fan, traded in one of Paul McCartney's first guitars to buy a flute. Fitness trainer is former British Martial Arts Champion, Ron Cuthbert.
