Richard S. Johnson
Something of a dare-devil sportsman. Richard (pronounced Rick-ard), played handball to a high standard in Sweden, having been a teen tennis player from the age of six. Took up skate-boarding and competed in the Swedish Championships. Suffered seven broken ribs, a hand and a foot over the years, so decided to give it up. He joked: ?To be any good you have to be crazy to do the stunts!" Started golf at 15 as his girlfriend's family played. Didn't enjoy it until neighbors, who practiced in the back yard, went away-and he decided to hit some shots. Won two national junior events but did not get picked for the Swedish amateur side. Has a mixed background-grandfather is American, from New Jersey, who married a Swede and settled there. Made his big breakthrough by winning the ANZ Championship in Sydney in 2002 on his way to finishing in a career-best position of 64th on the Volvo Order of Merit. Ended the season by winning his card on the US PGA Tour by finishing T11th the Qualifying School in California.
