Player Notes

Two years after being impressed by watching Jack Nicklaus win his sixth Masters, Westwood began playing golf at age 13, with a half a set bought by grandparents. . . Further embellished his magnificent Ryder Cup record in 2006 when, for the second successive time, he remained unbeaten in all five matches. Having claimed 4 1/2 points of a possible five in The 2004 Ryder Cup at Oakland Hills, the Englishman duly delivered again at The K Club last September with a haul of 4 points from five (three wins and two halved matches). After two years out of the limelight he won twice in 2003 and although he has narrowly missed out on adding to his impressive tally of victories in 2006 he continues to be a major force on the world stage, as demonstrated with his joint second in The Deutsche Bank Players? Championship of Europe and joint fourth in the Smurfit Kappa European Open at The K Club, two of the most prestigious events of the season. Ruled Europe in 2000 when six victories in the year saw him equal the record set by Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie and eventually end Montgomerie?s seven year tenure at the top of the Order of Merit. Married Laurae Coltart, sister of another Ryder Cup player, Andrew, in January 1999. Talented sportsman at school, played rugby, cricket and soccer. European Ryder Cup Team member in 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2006. . . Won seven times around the world in 1998. . .Was the first player other the Colin Montgomerie to win the European Order of Merit since 1992.
