Player Notes

For a second successive season claimed two titles on The European Tour in winning the Andalucia Open de Espa?a Valle Romano and the Mallorca Classic, the penultimate event of the 2006 campaign, to take his victory tally to five, three of which have been from play-offs. Those wins saw him finish 15th on the Order of Merit, his third best finish -since joining the Tour in 1994. His best year was in 2001 where he finished tenth, helped largely by finishing runner-up to David Duval in The Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes. He went on to make his Ryder Cup debut in 2002 at The De Vere Belfry where he was denied the chance of holing the winning putt by Paul Azinger?s audacious chip in from the bunker at the 18th in their singles tie. Earlier in his career, he came close to becoming the first player to win The European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage twice, having claimed top honors in 1996 and then finishing second in 1999. Also a four-time winner on the Challenge Tour in 1993 he finished 17th to gain card in US PGA Tour School in 1997. Attempted to play in America and Europe in 1998 and admitted it was a mistake ? ?I spent all my time on a plane!? Decision to re-focus totally on Europe paid off with victory in Madeira Island Open in 2000. Shot to international fame by finishing second to David Duval in the 130th Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes in 2001. It was the first time he had played in a Major after six failed attempts to qualify for the Open Championship and he performed magnificently to earn a place in The European Ryder Cup Team. Proved he could handle the big occasion by pushing Ernie Els all the way in the 2002 Dubai Desert Classic before playing his part in Europe?s memorable Ryder Cup triumph at The De Vere Belfry. Solid 2003 was followed by a modest 2004, in which he played a sizeable schedule in America but he started 2005 in style with victory in the Holden New Zealand Open. Six months later he followed that with a second play-off victory when he won the Deutsche Bank Players? Championship of Europe after defeating Angel Cabrera at the third extra hole. Superb 2005 saw him win twice, both in play-offs. Firstly he overcame Miles Tunnicliff to win the Holden New Zealand Open and then outlasted Angel Cabrera to claim The Deutsche Bank Players? Championship of Europe. Those wins, allied to four other Top-10 s, saw him finish 13th on the Order of Merit, his second best finish -since joining the Tour in 1994.
