Born in South Africa and moved to England at the age of five, and at that time began playing golf. . . Always will be remembered for finishing T-4 as an amateur in the 1998 British Open. Went on to win the Nashua Masters title in South Africa and the Crowns Tournament in Japan before winning his second European Tour title - the Victor Chandler British Masters - after an epic tussle with his close friend Ian Poulter, establishing himself as a genuine contender on the world stage. Underlined the fact in 2003 with his joint fifth finish in his US Open Championship debut, joining Fredrik Jacobson as the highest placed European at Olympia Fields Country Club. Also, partnering Paul Casey, helped England to second place in the WGC - World Cup at the end of the season, improving on their third place of the previous year. Won Silver Medal as leading amateur. Turned professional the next day. Missed card at Qualifying School in 1998 but finished fourth in 1999 and ninth in 2000 after coming within five spots of retaining his card.
