Believed to be the first professional to win a major championship in his first attempt in any major when he triumphed at the 2003 British Open at Royal St. George's in Sandwich, England. . .Ranked number 396 in the world at the start of the week and only was in the field through his tie for 13th in the Western Open, Curtis held off the world's best to finish on one under par 283, winning by a shot from Thomas Bjorn and Vijay Singh. He was the first player to win the Open Golf Championship on his first start since Tom Watson at Carnoustie in 1975. Jumped from 396 to 35 in the Official World Golf Ranking, the biggest single leap since the Ranking began in 1986. Other memorable day of 2003 came when he married Candace on the Saturday of the WGC - NEC Invitational in his home state of Ohio. Was not in the field until his British Open triumph but continued with the wedding a couple of hours after his third round finished.
