Started playing golf at the age of four when, armed with a club, he would follow his dad around Bootle Golf Club. At the age of six he won his first tournament an under 14s tournament at North Berwick, and hasn't looked back. . .Member of the victorious Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team in 2001. . .Turned professional the following week. . .Completed a highly successful first season on the European Tour in 2002 by finishing in 36th place on the Order of Merit, a performance which earned him Rookie of the Year honors. . .Further progress in 2003 hindered by glandular fever and after a moderate 2004, he made a spectacular start to 2005, winning his maiden European Tour victory when he held off Colin Montgomerie and Maarten Lafeber to win the Caltex Masters. . .Victory in the 2007 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship capped an outstanding season which also included seven Top-10s, including joint seventh in the U.S. Open and a climb into the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking. . .Prot?g? of six-time Major Champion Nick Faldo, who recognized him as a special talent during the Faldo Junior Series and took him under his wing.
