John Daly has withdrawn from the 91st PGA Championship, citing a back injury after shooting an opening-round 78 Thursday.
Daly said via his Twitter account Thursday night that the injury stems from one he sustained three years ago and that it's still hauting him. "The pain is just unbearable," Daly said.
Daly, who won the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked stick and the 1995 British Open at St. Andrews, also experienced back problems at last month's British Open, where he finished in a tie for 27th before missing his last two cuts on the PGA TOUR at the RBC Canadian Open and the Buick Open, where he shot a second-round 88.
"The guys have been working on me pretty hard in the physio here and they do a great job just trying to get my back to play," Daly said at the British Open. "It's just stretching more than anything. If they rub on it any more, I'm going to feel like a piece of gingerbread. It's just sore.
"The last three weeks have been pretty tough. They called it a sprained rib head, which I've never heard of. When I called my doctor, he said, athletes get it a lot; a lot of people you just roll over in bed and you get it. It's just a weird injury, and it's one of those if you keep doing what I'm doing, it just keeps reinjuring itself. But I've just got to keep it loose."
Daly, who shed some 80-90 pounds after lap band surgery, is currently scheduled to play in next week's Wyndham Championship in North Carolina on a sponsor's exemption. He has not given any indication of whether he'll play or not given the injury.
Thursday, Daly's round included three bogeys, three double bogeys, an eagle and one birdie.
Daly, whose only status on TOUR is as a past champion, has played in four TOUR events this season, with his tie for 27th at the British Open his best result. He also tied for 59th at the St. Jude Classic presented by FedEx, which was his first tournament on TOUR since last Fall.
