91st PGA Championship proves big boon for Bloomington

The near-record crowds at the 2009 PGA Championship brought significant economic benefit to the Bloomington and surrounding areas, generating more than $50 million in business for the metropolitan Minneapolis area, tournament organizers have announced.

Bloomington, MN -- The Bloomington Convention and Visitor Bureau announced that the number of attendees at the 91st PGA Championship yielded over $50 million in business to the area.

"Based on the 2008 forecast, we were right within the range of the estimated economic impact for the 2009 Tournament," said Dan O'Neill, Vice President of Strategy and Sales for the Bloomington CVB. The Bloomington CVB's economic impact number is based on the number of spectators attending and those from outside a 250-mile radius.

The majority of the visitors to the PGA Championship were from the five-state area, but there also were a large amount of Canadian visitors. Overall, nearly 35 states were represented.

The near-record crowds at the PGA Championship brought significant benefits to the metro area, particularly in Bloomington, the host CVB for the event. "Events like this provide a major boost to the tourism industry. Hotels get a great lift, bars and restaurants are full, and of course, the retailers at the Mall of America enjoyed a nice bump in traffic," said O'Neill.

Plus, the PGA Championship garnered extensive media exposure and highlighted one of the most challenging golf courses in the United States, Hazeltine National Golf Club.

"We're thrilled the 2009 PGA Championship met the economic impact expectations for the area," said Michael Belot, 2009 PGA Championship tournament director. "Bloomington provides tremendous resources and was a fantastic partner in making the Championship a remarkable success for The PGA and the region. This event was a home run for them and for the City of Chaska."

"It takes more than an amazing course to host a successful PGA Championship," said Jim Dauwalter, 2009 PGA Championship chair. "Bloomington was a wonderful partner and we're glad that they and the City of Chaska benefited from this partnership. Hazeltine National Golf Club looks forward to partnering with the CVB again for the 2016 Ryder Cup."

"We have already started planning for the 2016 Ryder Cup, which will also be played at Hazeltine. The Ryder Cup is, in some ways, even bigger, given the contest is regarded as one of the top 10 global sporting events. It's literally followed by hundreds of millions of people around the world. We will be ready with exceptional hospitality for The PGA, its customers and this prized event," said O'Neill.

"The City of Chaska could not be happier with the success of the 2009 PGA Championship and our partnership with Hazeltine National Golf Club," said Matt Podhradsky, City Administrator for the City of Chaska. "The eyes of the world were on Hazeltine and the event was a tremendous positive for the City of Chaska. We are already greatly looking forward to the 2016 Ryder Cup."
