Wannamoisett Country Club to host 2016 Junior PGA Championship

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, Rhode Island, has been named the host site of the 2016 Junior PGA Championship presented by Under Armour and Genesis Networks. The Championship will be conducted Aug. 9-12.

One of the nation’s premier events in youth golf, the Junior PGA Championship has been a stepping stone to both collegiate and professional careers for many of golf’s past and current performers including: Phil Mickelson, Inbee Park, Jordan Spieth, Alexis Thompson, Michelle Wie and Tiger Woods.

The 41st edition of the Championship will be the final qualifying event for the 10th Junior Ryder Cup at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minnesota, Sept. 26-27, 2016.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring the Junior PGA Championship to Wannamoisett Country Club, which is such a historic venue,” said PGA of America President Derek Sprague. “We’re confident that Wannamoisett will test the best junior golfers in the country and produce an exciting Championship.”

Wannamoisett, a unique par-69 layout, opened in 1914, and was designed by Donald Ross. The facility hosted the 1931 PGA Championship and is the annual site for the Northeast Amateur.

“The membership and staff at Wannamoisett Country Club are thrilled to host the 2016 Junior PGA Championship,” said Douglas Scala, Wannamoisett’s Club President. “We have a long history of hosting major golf events, and the Junior PGA Championship will add to that legacy.”

Begun in 1976, the Junior PGA Championship presented by Under Armour and Genesis Networks has been a popular stop on the national junior circuit for many of today’s PGA and LPGA touring professionals.
