• Steely Micheel seals deal at PGA Championship — Not many knew Shaun Micheel until this weekend. No one will forget the shot that won him the PGA Championship.
• Tiger leaves Oak Hill haunted by his performance — It is sure to be a long, long time before Tiger Woods can erase the nightmare that was his showing in the 85th PGA Championship.

Saturday August 16th, 2003

• PGA Championship Notebook — Not only has a European not won a major in 16 tournaments, one hasn't won the PGA Championship since 1930.
• Major opportunity knocks for Micheel, Campbell — With Woods out of the way at 9-over par, the 85th PGA Championship is there for anyone to win.
• Tiger anything but tickled at Oak Hill — Walter Hagen's record appears safe for at least five more years. Tiger Woods' hopes of joining Hagen as the only men to win a major in five straight seasons took a serious hit after a third-round 73.
• Micheel storms into PGA lead — One more time, Phil Mickelson's bravado got him into big trouble. And one more time we could see a relative unknown shock the golf work at a major. Shaun Micheel, winless since joining the PGA Tour in 2000, birdied four of his last five holes Friday to storm into the lead at the 85th PGA Championship.

• The cut that stings — Ben Curtis didn't seem to mind missing the cut at the 85th PGA Championship, but several others were dismayed at having the weekend off.
• Sloppy finish spoils Els' day —
  Ernie Els put himself right back into contention Friday in the 85th PGA Championship. The way he finished, though, left him shaking his head.

• Q & A with TNT's Jim Huber — Jim Huber, TNT's Emmy Award-winning announcer, is at the 85th PGA Championship serving as the network's feature essayist and lead interviewer. PGA.com spoke with Huber following the first round Thursday.
• Tiger's tangled mess of a first round — For the sixth straight first round at a major, Tiger Woods failed to break 70. At the 85th PGA Championship on Thursday, he hacked his way to 4-over 74.
• Lefty right on, Tiger way off at Oak Hill — Mickelson, Pampling share clubhouse lead at 4-under 66, while Woods suffered through a frustrating 4-over 74
• Aussie's awesome shot — Robert Allenby of Australia was dead-solid perfect with his tee shot at the 226-yard 11th hole Thursday, holing a 4-iron for an ace at the difficult par-3.
• Lefty right on early at Oak Hill — Phil Mickelson had been relatively quiet during the days leading up to the 85th PGA Championship, but he made some big noise early in his frist round Thursday. Lefty birdied three of his first four holes at tough Oak Hill Country Club to take the early lead in the season's final major.

• A man whose life is in tune — Country music star Vince Gill gives unselfishly to golf and humanity, and the PGA of America was there Wednesday to say, "Thank you," with its distinguished Service Award.
• Inspiration from an unlikely source — Bolstered by Ben Curtis' British win and Rich Beem's major triumph a year ago, everyone is feeling confident at the 85th PGA Championship.

• Former PGA champion Nelson withdraws with hip injury (8/11/03) — The two-time winner will be replaced in the field by Billy Andrade, who will be making his 14th PGA appearance.

Pre-Championship

• Tiger's last shot at glory — Four wins. Four other top-five finishes. Tops the PGA Tour money list. Has the lowest scoring average. Sounds like a stellar season for any player, right? Not if you're Tiger Woods.
• Citing family time, Price withdraws from PGA Championship — Two-time PGA champion said he wants to extend his vacation. He'll be replaced in the field by Billy Mayfair.
• Ian Woosnam pulls out of PGA Championship following the death of his father — The Welshman, who also pulled out of the Nordic Open and the Scandinavian Masters, had been granted an invitation to the season's final major.
• Consummate professional — His brother Butch might be more well known throughout the golf world given his status as Tiger Woods' instructor, but rest assured Craig Harmon is every bit as renowned as a class-act professional.
• Rich Beem Media Day — With a baby due during the PGA Championship, Rich Beem hoping for an early or late delivery.
• Love Affair — Rochester's annual snowfall dwarfs flagsticks. Their windchills occasionally read like Tiger's leaderboard scores when he's on a roll. (You know, minus-18, minus-19, minus-20.) But their endless winters haven't stopped us from becoming a golf mecca. They've only deepened Rochester's devotion to the game. It's no snow job, Rochester really is golf crazy.
• Treasured tradition — Surrounding the East Course's 13th green, the 47-year old Hill of Fame is truly special.

• High Beem — Playing as if he had nothing to lose, Rich Beem buried Tiger Woods and captured a PGA Championship even he thought he had no business winning.

Adam Scott (1-under-par (69) to move to 1-over-par 141) (on his round) "I was pretty happy with 69 today, that's for sure. I just made a couple of putts and that was really the difference from yesterday."

Rod Pampling (4-over-par (74) to finish even-par - 140)
(on his hole out on 18) "It was not a bad tee shot, the wind just got a hold of it a little bit and pushed it right into the trap and it hit the front lip and rolled back in and it finished on a down slope so tossing up as to whether just to hit a wedge out but aggression got the better of me and I tried to hit it out and it hit the lip and buried then I just hacked that out and it had to be the perfect number and it ended up being a perfect shot so it was a good way to finish."

Lee Janzen (4-over-par (74) to move to 2-over-par -- 142) (on the course today relative to yesterday) "The greens are harder and faster and there is more wind so it narrows your margin for error and you stop being as aggressive, stop aiming directly at the pin and playing away from it a little bit so even good shots are not as good as they were yesterday. Marginal shots are that much further away and harder to make par. A guy who shoots really well can probably play 2- or 3-under but it is going to be harder and harder to shoot under par if it keeps getting harder and harder each day."

Jeff Maggert (3-over-par (73) to move to 12-over-par -- 152) (on his eagle on the first hole) "That was about the only good shot I hit. Sometimes good things happen. I was trying to get a little run going because I thought I had a chance if I could shoot a couple under today. I tried, but there is always next week."
