ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 4, 2013 -- Flower City Habitat for Humanity, PGA of America and PGA Tour Wives Association leaders broke ground today on a new home for a family in Rochester’s JOSANA neighborhood. The project, to be completed in conjunction with the playing of the 95th PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club in August, is made possible by a partnership between The PGA of America Spouses and the PGA TOUR Wives Association, who initiated a philanthropic alliance earlier this year.
“Flower City Habitat for Humanity is an amazing organization and we are proud to support its efforts,” said PGA of America President Ted Bishop. “When this house is complete, it will change the life of one local family and will provide a lasting impact to the host community long after the conclusion of the 95th PGA Championship.”
“Providing safe and affordable homes for the Rochester community would not be possible without the support of partners like The PGA of America Spouses and PGA TOUR Wives Association,” said Arthur Woodward, CEO of Flower City Habitat for Humanity. “They are great partners and The PGA Habitat Build house demonstrates their commitment to our community. Home ownership provides a solid foundation for families and revitalizes neighborhoods.”
Located at 170 Whitney Street in Rochester’s JOSANA neighborhood, major construction of the house will take place during PGA Championship Week, August 5-11, 2013. The PGA of America Spouses and PGA TOUR Wives Association will dedicate the home on August 7 and once completed, The PGA Habitat House family will receive a 30-year, interest-free mortgage to pay for the house.
As part of the Habitat program, each family contributes 450 hours of labor, with half going towards building their own home and half towards building other Habitat houses. In addition to the financial support of The PGA of America, The PGA of America Spouses and PGA TOUR Wives Association will be donating labor towards the construction of the house with a focus on completing it by August 7, 2013.
In fall 2007, Flower City Habitat for Humanity launched a major, multi-year 100 house commitment to the JOSANA neighborhood. At the completion of the 2013/14 build season, Flower City Habitat will have completed 41 houses of the 100 house commitment.
