STATEMENT FROM THE PGA: The 25th Championship, originally slated last October, was postponed due to a week of inclement weather in Northern Virginia. The restart (April 15-18) is at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Northern Virginia received more than seven inches of rain that week in October, forcing the postponement.
Gene Fieger of Naples, Fla., collected four birdies against only one bogey on Thursday while a constant 20-plus mph eastern wind battered the field. He finished the most difficult day of the week with a 69 and a four-shot lead over Steve Parker of Texas and Frank Esposito of New Jersey.
Stan Cooke of Homosassa, Fla., crafted a gem of a round Tuesday at PGA Golf Club, rattling off six birdies and an eagle on his way to a 7-under-par 65 and a two-stroke lead in the Southworth Senior PNC. Frank Esposito Jr. of New Jersey and Rob Gibbons of Oregon each shot 67.

Woodward finally getting his chance to defend title in Southworth Senior PNC
Jim Woodward of Edmond, Okla., has spent 18 months as professional golf’s answer to an expectant father. With a rude assist from Mother Nature, Woodward’s defense of his title in the 2013 Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship presented by Mercedes-Benz USA has taken that long.
--Pre-Tournament Notebook: PGA Golf Club to set new record as host venue
Steve Schneiter of Utah and Jeff Smith of Iowa have more in common than their success in golf and their spots in the Southworth Senior PNC field. Both are great storytellers, and both come from families with a long history in golf and a passion to grow the game in the United States.
Mike Malaska of Mesa, Ariz., the 2011 national PGA Teacher of the Year, is making his fourth appearance in the Southworth Senior PNC, and relishing the opportunity. The 59-year-old, who prides himself on staying fit, wants to earn the respect of his students as someone who practices what he preaches on the lesson tee.
