might have stepped away from the PGA Tour, but he's certainly kept himself busy with his charity work and his new role as an analyst on the Golf Channel. He's also gotten into golf course design in recent years, and his latest project opened for business today.
The Sewailo Golf Club is at the Casino Del Sol Resort southwest of Tucson, Ariz. The casino resort is a creation of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and, of course, Begay is the only full-blooded Native American to have played on the PGA Tour.
''Sewailo is a unique opportunity to showcase the beauty and tradition of the Pascua Yaqui community,'' Begay said. ''I'm delighted to see this project come to fruition and confident that the golf course will serve the Pascua Yaqui community for generations to come.''
In the Pascua Yaqui language, the word Sewailo means "flower world," and the course high in the Sonoran desert features more than 30,000 native flowers, plants and cacti across its 200-acre spread. The course measures 7,400 yards from the championship tees and features five different tee boxes on each hole. Large lakes, flowing streams, waterfalls and plush landscaping blend help the layout transition through both desert terrain and an oasis environment while taking full advantage of the surrounding mountain views.
The course is open to casino guests as well as the general public. It will be managed by Troon Golf, and among its amenities are an extensive practice arena including areas for chipping and putting and a 2,000-square-foot climate-controlled teaching facility. In addition, the resort includes two casinos, six restaurants and bars, a state-of-the-art conference center with breakout rooms, the Hiapsi Spa and Oasis pool and bar, and an outdoor amphitheater.
