Schwartzel qualifies for PGA Grand Slam of Golf

Charl Schwartzel made an impressive and improbable comeback, making birdies on the final four holes, to win the 2011 Masters. On a day that saw incredible drama on a crowded leaderboard, the South African golfer managed to outlast a field on a day that saw numerous changes at the top of the leaderboard. And for his efforts, Schwartzel also becomes the first golfer to earn a berth in the most difficult tournament in the world to qualify for – the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

Schwartzel’s first major championship punched his ticket to Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda, where the major champions will return Oct. 18-19 to decide the title of “Champion of Champions.”

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf will once again air on TNT, where it is broadcast in prime time to more than 89 million U.S. homes and an international audience of more than 100 countries. Comprised of the four major championship winners, the 36-hole PGA Grand Slam of Golf provides the best players in the world the opportunity to earn a spot in the most elusive and difficult foursome in all of golf.

Joining Schwartzel in that foursome will be the winners of the U.S. Open, June 16-19 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, MD, the British Open, July 14-17 at Royal St. Georges in the United Kingson; and the 93rd PGA Championship, Aug. 11-14 at Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, GA.

The alternate system for the Grand Slam has changed. Should a player win more than one major championship this season, defending Slam Champ Ernie Els is first alternate. Beyond that, the normal alternate system is in effect, with the foursome filled out by a Major Champions Points List, composed of past major Champions who compete in the current year's majors.

Past PGA Grand Slam of Golf Champions include: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Els, Jim Furyk, Lucas Glover, Angel Cabrera, Greg Norman, Nick Price and Ben Crenshaw.
