Dougherty had been on and off the PGA Tour several times since first qualifying for his card in 1975. He played the Tour regular from 1975 through 1982 but never earned more than $27,948 in a single season. He returned home to Pennsylvania to work at Edgemont Country Club as a PGA Professional and became the terror on the PGA Professional series. In 1985 he not only won the PGA Club Professional championship, the highest honor for a club professional, but was also named PGA Club Professional Player of the Year. Dougherty achieved every conceivable goal as a PGA Professional and went back to the Qualifying Tournament in 1986 and regained his Tour card. In his first season back on tour, 1987 wasn't a banner year even though he made the top 125. But he lost his card in 1989 with a poor season, and was forced back to Q-school to regain it for 1990. All of this set him up for his biggest golfing thrill as he found himself in a playoff with Jim Gallagher Jr. for the Greater Milwaukee Open. Even though he lost, it helped Dougherty save his Tour card for 1991. Since then Dougherty has been in the top 125, except for 1994 when his earnings dropped below $100,000 and he finished 157th on the money list. That along with a shoulder injury forced him to miss the first half of 1995 but after returning and in his 3rd start of '95 his shinning moment came through when he won the Deposit Guaranty Classic. After 20 years on and off the tour he won his first PGA Tour event and at age 48 became the oldest first time winner since John Barnum won the 1962 Cajun Classic at 51. Dougherty is a serious model train buff and recently has begun restoring pinball machines. He is called "Doc" on Tour and when he left that circuit to join the Champions Tour was the only remaining Vietnam veteran on the PGA Tour. |
