Started to play the game at age 13, mainly because his close friends were playing golf and he wanted to be with them. He learned the game by hitting balls on the frozen playground and admits it wasn't long until he was hooked completely. During his days at Herkimer High School in upper New York State, he never lost a match, and won the 1970 New York State Interscholastic title. During his two years at nearby Oswego State College, he only lost once. After turning professional in 1973, he tried for his PGA Tour card twice and missed, forcing him to play mini-tour events in Florida. Finally, in June of 1977, he qualified for his tour card and the following year, teamed with Bob Mann to win the Walt Disney World National Team title. The next year (1979) was a banner year for Levi, has he won the Houston Open and placed 20th on the money list with $141,612. Since then he has been in the top 70 of the money list every year, despite not devoting 100% of his efforts to the game. By his own admission his family is very important to him and he would rather be with his wife Judy and their four kids and playing the stock market, which is not only a hobby but also a passion for Levi. Major Championships are not important to Levi, he has never finished higher than 11th in them and has never played in the British Open. Even though his 12 wins and close to 4 million in earnings are impressive, the media has largely ignored him. Levi didn't win a tournament for five years, but broke that streak in 1990 by winning four times (Atlanta, Western Open, Hartford and Canadian Open) and earning just over 1 million dollars, which placed him second on the money list and won him 1990 PGA Tour Player-of-the-Year. . . Maintains a great interest in the stock market. |
